How to Tailgate Like the Pros

We are officially in the thick of football season and while the players on the field have their game day, the guys and gals in the parking lot have a whole other game: The Tailgate. Just like the actual football game, the tailgate takes strategy, planning, prep and execution.

At the recent Giants vs. Bills game at The Meadowlands, Red Carpet Rollout ran into some serious tailgaters. Here are some of the tips from the pros we met:

  1. Zip Lock Bags: Pre-measure any of your necessary ingredients and put them in zip lock bags. Why bring an entire box of something when all you need is a cup or two. Also this works for meats you are marinating. Marinate in the zip lock and you are ready to pack and go.
  2. Parking Spot Selection: End of the row or an end row all together is best says those we met up with. You get more space to spread out.
  3. Games: Bring games to play such as cornhole or a football to throw around. You get to know your tailgating neighbors and also keep your friends and family entertained.
  4. Pre-Prep: Make burgers ahead of time so all you have to do is throw them on the grill.
  5. Grill Prep: Line the grill with tinfoil to decrease your clean up time and make porting your grill home less of a messy chore.
Cornhole was a game we saw many people playing:

Pork Loin Sandwiches: Marinate and cook the pork loin at home the day before the game. Heat it up on the grill on game day, slice and serve:

The pro of tailgating. We met Mitch Dimatteo and his family and friends from Brick, NJ. They had the ultimate setup. They hitch a small trailer to their car and had: a bathroom, flat screen TV, lounge area, ultimate grill and grill-master, and tons of Giants decor.

I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t helping out with a fundraiser or planning a party, whether it was charity leagues in junior high school or fundraisers in high school. I pursued marketing in college as I loved how many exciting roles were covered under one umbrella. It opened the door for me to pursue PR, communications and events. I found a career that is the perfect balance of exactly who I am – creative and detailed. As a public relations and marketing/communications executive with over 15 years of experience, event planning has been at the core of much of my work. I’ve planned everything from a 2,000 person corporate gala to company retreats, charitable auctions and intimate cocktail parties. Event planning is a passion. When I’m not working my day-job as the head of PR/communications, I dedicate my time to the New York Junior League as well as other charitable organizations. (For my full bio, please see LinkedIn.)
