Lobster Themed Birthday Party

I’m blogging from Montauk, NY this week – a summer vacation tradition I share with my sister and our significant others. We rented a beach cottage on Fort Pond. I cannot get over the gorgeous sunsets! While here it was Drew’s birthday (my sister Ally’s boyfriend). Ally - a tremendous event planner – wanted to throw Drew a lobster themed birthday party. Unfortunately she was in Asia for work leading up to our vacation and came directly to Montauk from Hong Kong. She had only one day to put Drew’s birthday together! When she showed up to the house she didn’t know what she would find as far as serving dishes, plates, etc. Luckily the owner of the house collects antique dishware. She was in the clear for serving ware – but as for everything else, she immediately got started on decor and menu.

I have to say – with less than 24 hours of planning, 2 hours of shopping, and three grocery stores in The Hamptons – Drew’s lobster themed birthday party was a total hit!

Ally and I spent the morning hitting up a few grocery stores and party shops, and then went to work on laying out a cocktail hour spread. She bought a few giant lobster balloons and some plastic lobsters for the table decor. Candles helped enhance the look.

My boyfriend Tim should really go to culinary school. He whipped up quite the feast. He made popovers, grilled baked potatoes, grilled farm-fresh corn and mixed veggies, steak with a pepper rub, and lobsters with garlic butter.

Birthday cake was served by the fire pit overlooking the pond.

Including cake, decor and a lobster and steak dinner for 8 people, the event came to roughly $300. The bulk of the budget was on the lobsters and steak.

Here are some inspiring Lobster Dinner Party ideas from Pinterest.

Have you thrown a birthday party together in one day? Have you thrown a lobster themed party? What are your best practices that we can share with others?

I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t helping out with a fundraiser or planning a party, whether it was charity leagues in junior high school or fundraisers in high school. I pursued marketing in college as I loved how many exciting roles were covered under one umbrella. It opened the door for me to pursue PR, communications and events. I found a career that is the perfect balance of exactly who I am – creative and detailed. As a public relations and marketing/communications executive with over 15 years of experience, event planning has been at the core of much of my work. I’ve planned everything from a 2,000 person corporate gala to company retreats, charitable auctions and intimate cocktail parties. Event planning is a passion. When I’m not working my day-job as the head of PR/communications, I dedicate my time to the New York Junior League as well as other charitable organizations. (For my full bio, please see LinkedIn.)
